Huddersfield Giants youngster Liam Johnson has signed a new deal with the club until the end of the 2018 season.
The former England Academy Captain, 19, is the latest youngster to commit to the club, following in the footsteps of Oliver Roberts and Sam Wood.
Johnson has been playing for Oldham this season on dual registration in the Championship as well as the Giants Senior Academy.
Giants Managing Director, Richard Thewlis commented: “It is great that Liam asked us for some longer term security in his quest to become a Super League player with his hometown club and the coaching staff were able to recommend that he should stay with us longer.
“He has made 12 appearances already this year in the highly competitive championship environment at Oldham, moving between the centres and backrow, and many people may forget that he is still eligible for academy rugby as he only just turned 19. Liam’s next two years will be critical in his development as he seeks the next step up but it’s good to see his desire to remain a Giant and belief in his pathway into the Super League side over time.”
Johnson added: “I’m happy to have signed a contract extension, my contract was up at the end of next year so it gives me a bit more security and I can focus on playing, get some more minutes under my belt and develop as a player.
“I have enjoyed playing at Oldham this season and it gives me the chance to play against more experienced players and it will prepare me well to step up to the big stage. My aim this season is to carry on playing for the 19s and do whatever I can with Oldham to help them stay up. Hopefully then I get a chance on the field with the first team.”
