Another scintillating performance from Denny Solomona at the weekend wasn’t enough for Warrington, with his four tries not enough for the Tigers as they went down 26-42 to Warrington.
However, his four-try haul saw Super League’s most exciting flier smash a club record for tries scored in a Super League season. That honour previously belonged to former Cas favourite Darren Rogers, but Solomona’s 28-tries for the year now puts him at the top of the chart.
But Solomona’s accomplishments might not be over just yet. The former London Broncos star is just eight tries short of Lesley Vainikolo all-time Super League record of 36 tries in one regular season, a record that his been in place since 2004 when the former Bradford winger scored 36 in just 26 appearances.
With eight games to play, Solomona has work to do to reach the record, but if he can play in the remaining games this season and maintain his try to game ratio of 1.4 this year, he will break the record.
Additionally, the club’s current record for tries scored in one season is 40, an achievement reached by St John Ellis in the 1993/94 season, another figure Solomona could yet topple.
There have been arguments that Solomona must score eight tries this weekend to break Vainikolo’s record, given the current structure and the Super 8s split, while others claim he must score 11 more tries to break the record as Vainikolo went on to score two tries in the play-offs that year, taking his tally to 38. But we’ll let the stat gurus have that argument, and in the meantime, Solomona’s try-scoring antics will no doubt continue to amaze.
