Zak Hardaker has admitted he would be keen to try and secure a contract in the NRL for next season: but says even if he doesn’t, he’s proud of what he’s achieved by becoming an NRL player.
Hardaker has been at Penrith for almost two months, scoring his first try for the club in their recent victory against Brisbane Broncos as he settles into life in Australia.
His swap deal with James Segeyaro is initially until only the end of the season, but with the hooker thriving at Leeds as they prepare for the Qualifiers, Hardaker told Sportal.co.nz that he would be delighted to get a deal in Australia next year.
“I’ve had no pre-season or anything like that and I think I’m in a more difficult situation than the other boys,” he said.
“For me it was about getting this opportunity I’ve got and to do the best for myself – if I can secure a contract, which would be terrific, then great.
“If I didn’t I’d still go back home happy, and more importantly I’d go back knowing I’ve learned something and I’ve achieved something I set out to do – to play some NRL games, which is a dream come true.
“I’ve loved it so far and if that meant I could come back next year, in four years or in five years – or if this was my first and last time – I can say I’ve been to the NRL and I’ve played in some good games and enjoyed my time here.”
