Stone admits he isn’t sure when McGillvary will return

Huddersfield Giants coach Rick Stone has conceded he doesn’t yet know when England winger Jermaine McGillvary will return to action.

McGillvary has been missing since last month’s defeat to St Helens – Stone’s first game in charge – after picking up an injury to his quad.

And Stone told the Huddersfield Examiner that he doesn’t know when McGillvary will be fit again: but the Giants have been boosted by the news that Tom Symonds will feature against Batley on Sunday afternoon.

“We’re just not quite sure on Jerry at all,” Stone said..

“It’s good news that Tom can return this weekend. In fact, at a pinch he could have featured against Featherstone, but we decided it wouldn’t do him any harm to get a few more miles under his belt before we put him back out there.

“But with Jerry we just don’t know at this stage when he’ll be right to play again.

“Like with Tom’s injury, it’s one of those where if you bring him back just a little bit too early you risk doing longer-term damage and the player being out for a lot longer.

“You just have to err on the side of caution with things like this. Hopefully, we’ll see Jerry back in action pretty soon, but we just can’t make a call on that now.”
