He was born in Hull, came desperately close to playing international rugby league for the United States and has now ended up in a Scotland shirt: but Frankie Mariano is loving every minute of the journey after a tumultuous 2016.

Mariano saw his campaign ravaged by injuries once again, which culminated in the decision from Castleford not to offer the popular forward a contract for 2017.

Now technically out of work as he waits on his next move, Mariano insists the international experience with Scotland has been a breath of fresh air for him.

“When you say I’m an international player it does sound a bit daunting,” he jokes. “But I’ve enjoyed every single minute of it, it’s been great.

“It was the USA who initially contacted me, because my grandfather was born in America and they were asking me all sorts of questions about eligibility with a view to playing.

“However, as we found out more, we eventually found out that my granddad was born in Scotland!”

Mariano made his debut for the Bravehearts in the unusual position of prop last weekend – but in a bid to try and secure a deal somewhere, he says he’s just enjoying playing once again – with his run in the side likely to continue tonight against New Zealand.

“We didn’t disgrace ourselves against England,” he admits. “It was a tough ask, we stood up to the challenge and having played prop, it was a bit unusual for me – but wherever Steve wants me to play, I will do.

“The Kiwis will be a huge test for me. It’s the benchmark, playing prop against someone like Jesse Bromwich! If I play prop again, hopefully I can show off my versatility.”
