London Broncos ended their four-year absence from Super League as they clinched promotion to the top flight with a 4-2 victory over Toronto.
Two Jarrod Sammut goals were enough for the unfancied Broncos, whose promotion hopes had been dismissed before the season had even started.
But Danny Ward’s side achieved the unthinkable, not only by winning promotion, but securing their return to the top flight with a win against the heavily-fancied Wolfpack out in Canada.
The game was cagey throughout, with neither side looking particularly crisp with the ball. But London looked more assured, and ultimately nudged ahead in the first-half through a penalty goal.
Toronto had their chances; an early Josh McCrone try was chalked off for offside while Mason Caton-Brown went close after kicking forward a loose pass.
The Wolfpack, eventually, hit level, as Gareth O’Brien kicked a field goal after the break, but within minutes London were back ahead through another penalty goal, and it proved decisive.
Paul Rowley’s side pushed frantically for a winner, but London held on, first holding up Ashton Sims before Alex Walker produced a stunning last-ditch tackle to deny Blake Wallace.
In the end, the Broncos held on for a famous win.
