Tommy Makinson has won the RLIF Golden Boot award after starring in England’s series win over New Zealand.
Makinson was part of a four-man shortlist for the award, which only takes into account international games, including James Tedesco (Australia), Dallin Watene-Zelezniak (New Zealand) and Elliott Whitehead (England).
“It’s not something I thought I was in with a chance with at the start of the night,” said Makinson.
“Just to be nominated was something special, but to come away with it means so much to me with how much hard work I’ve put in.
“I had my injury doubts for two years. You always question yourself, whether you can reach the pinnacle which is international rugby. I’m well on the way now with people around me like my family, good coaches, club and country.
“I’ve always been humble, I’ve come back slowly from the injuries, had two good years behind me and felt confident but like I said whoever you picture in the world and say ‘you’re going to win the golden boot’, I don’t think it quite sinks in. I don’t think it’s going to sink in for a while yet.”
