Wigan’s executive director Kris Radlinski admits plans between the Warriors and Catalans to stage a game at Barcelona’s Nou Camp are ‘very close’.
The idea has been mooted for several months, with Catalans declaring their intention to play a Super League fixture at the iconic stadium ever since winning the Challenge Cup back in August.
They paraded the trophy at half-time during a recent Barcelona fixture, and when quizzed on the matter on Wednesday, Radlinski told the press that the arrangement, which would see a game hosted there on May 18, is on the verge of being completed.
“We want it to happen, Catalans want it to, I believe it’s very close,” said Radlinski. “I’m confident within the next two weeks it’ll be confirmed.”
Radlinski also admitted that such is the interest in holding a Super League game at such a remarkable venue – the stadium can hold almost 100,000 spectators – he has already seen interest from people who would otherwise not attend a Wigan fixture.
“I know people who don’t come to the stadium in Wigan saying, ‘I’ll definitely go to the Nou Camp’, so if it comes off it would be amazing.”
