A golden party
Not one! Not two! But three games went to golden point last weekend in the NRL!
It would have been four if Rhyse Martin hadn’t shanked a conversion in the final minute in Canterbury’s defeat to Melbourne on Sunday morning.
Corey Norman kicked the Dragons to victory in Newcastle, Manly Sea Eagles had Daly Cherry-Evans to thank for downing the Rabbitohs and Nathan Cleary got Penrith out of jail against Wests.
It’s certainly a close competition with only Melbourne remaining unbeaten and the Titans without a victory.
Penrith need to improve
While Penrith did sneak a victory against Wests Tigers thanks to Cleary’s kicking skill, their performance in the opening four rounds has been quite concerning.
Many believed the Panthers would improve on their fifth-placed finish last year but have so far only won two out of four and most certainly got away with one on Friday. Wests were by far the best team and only Esan Marsters’ poor kicking from the tee saved the home side.
They need some extra sessions on ball control and fast!
The Roosters are crowing
They’re just too good at the moment!
After losing in the opening round against South Sydney, the Roosters look a cut above the rest and were completely dominant against the Broncos on Thursday.
If it isn’t James Tedesco causing havoc, then Luke Keary’s on hand instead. Both were brilliant at the SCG allowing Cronk to play a reduced, but still important, role for Sydney.
While Melbourne have the lead on the ladder, the reigning Premiers look ominous.
Brisbane toiling
The Roosters were great, but there seem to problems at the Broncos this year.
Brisbane legend Gordon Tallis came out this week to slag off the current team saying: “They have a $27 million facility and they all sit there drinking coffees and then they walk around the town like they own the place.”
“They own nothing. They’ve won nothing”
Strong words but not unfair. The NRL needs a Brisbane side at the top of the table and this outfit doesn’t look like achieving that at the moment.
Korbin’s heroics
He’s out for eight weeks after breaking his arm in the Dragon’s win over Newcastle but that didn’t stop Korbin Sims playing on!
This is why we love the game: Players are prepared to play on for the sake of their team and fans, even when they definitely shouldn’t.
“Coming from our medical staff, they weren’t sure how bad it was and certainly Korbin was displaying to the medical staff that he’d like to stay there and try to work through it,” said Sims’ coach Paul McGregor.
“Then at half-time, the doctor had a look at it … and the choice was made that he’s not to return to the field.”
We’ll look forward to seeing Korbin back on the field later on in the season.
