Leeds Rhinos are set to play the waiting game in their quest to sign a prop.
Head coach Richard Agar has made no secret of his desire to bolster the pack following the departure of Trent Merrin and the club has identified targets to fill that role.
However, any business is likely to be done after the club’s season opener with Hull FC, with Leeds keen to keep their options open for now.
The belief internally at Headingley is that their squad is in a fit enough state to attack the start of the campaign without the need to add a new player, though a potential injury picked up by prop Ava Seumanufagai in the club’s pre-season clash with Wigan might force them into more immediate action.
While the Rhinos have options to sign players now, various factors mean they would rather see how the opening weeks of the season pan out before making a decision on them. On the flip side, certain players overseas are open to making the move, but would rather assess their options once the season is underway.
Holding onto the cap space and quota spot freed by Merrin also gives Leeds the luxury of seeing who becomes available in the coming weeks, with players inevitably emerging on the market due to salary cap pressure or falling out of favour.
