Salford chasing Giants star

Salford Red Devils are pursuing a deal for Huddersfield forward Oliver Roberts.

League Express understands the two clubs have held discussions about a deal that would see the Ireland international join the club on a season-long loan.

Ian Watson admitted earlier this year that he would be keen to bolster his options in the back row, should the opportunity arise.

Now, last year’s Grand Finalists look set to make their move for the 25-year-old, who appears to have fallen out of favour at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Roberts was demoted in the club’s squad numbers this year and started the season playing for the club’s dual-registration partner, Halifax, on Sunday, for whom he scored the winning try against Sheffield Eagles in the last minute of the game.

Huddersfield-born Roberts started his career at Bradford before joining the Giants in 2015. In total, he has made 88 Super League appearances and starred for Ireland in the 2017 World Cup.

While a deal has yet to be completed, both clubs are keen to finalise a deal and will continue negotiations this week.

Watson has been a long-time admired of the forward and hopes to finally have his man by the end of the week.
