Rochdale Hornets Chairman Andy Mazey (pictured) is hoping that the RFL will ratify a proposed mid-season exhibition game against Valencia Huracanes in June.
The Spanish side announced the agreement on social media last week, with the Hornets confirming that the game is still subject to RFL approval.
“In principle, we have agreed to play Valencia this summer in what should be an exciting event for Rugby League,” said Mazey.
“We’re going to try and turn it into an exhibition and create a bit of buzz and make an event of it.
“I’ve had brief conversations about it with the RFL, but we will still need to go through all the details of it. There are a lot of boxes to tick and the proposal will need to be signed off.
“But I’m hopeful that, because it is in the best interests of promoting the sport, we’ll get the go-ahead.”
Meanwhile, new signing Sean Penkywicz has been named as Hornets’ captain for 2020. He will be joined by Andy Lea as vice-captain and Shaun Ainscough as club captain.
“Sean in the most experienced player in the squad and he has previously played for Matt and captained sides for him before, so I think that was the logical decision,” added Mazey.
“There is always an emphasis on team work though and he’ll have Andy and Shaun there as well. It’ll be a team effort from a leadership group.”
The club has also signed 17-year-old Dan Nixon on a dual-registration agreement with Oldham St Annes.
