Hull FC’s search for their next head coach will continue this week after they brought a halt to talks with Ian Watson.
The Black and Whites held talks with the Salford head coach about their vacant position, but they mutually agreed to close those discussions, with Watson saying the timing wasn’t right for him to make the move to the KCOM Stadium.
The club will now examine the credentials of the numerous other candidates who have applied for the job.
Interim head coach Andy Last remains keen on getting the role permanently and has helped his case with three straight victories, which have propelled Hull to sixth in the table.
Other candidates are being considered too, but Watson will definitely not take up the position, after complimenting Hull owner Adam Pearson last week.
“I can’t speak highly enough of how professional they were,” Watson said.
“They did everything the right way, they went to the club and asked for permission to speak to me. The club gave them that permission, I spoke to Adam (Pearson) and James (Clark) at Hull and they were really good in terms of being genuine people talking about the staff and players at Hull, their own families and what they wanted to do.
“My concern was my players and my staff at Salford as well. It was really interesting, it’s classed as a top-four club and I do feel that’s the next step and progression.
“I just felt with the circumstances and the timing with Covid and everything; my girls are in the final year of A-Levels and GCSEs, it’s probably just a bit too early. But I’m flattered they even considered me.”
