Paul Wellens on his St Helens future, relationship with Super League club’s board and how players have responded

PAUL WELLENS has no concern over his future at St Helens, revealing that him, Saints owner – Eamonn McManus – and chief executive – Mike Rush – have held talks about recruitment for next season.

Despite Saints losing five games in a row for the first time in the modern era, Wellens remains confident that he is the right man for the job.

“I’m going about my business doing my job and it might sound bizarre but my relationship with Eamonn (Saints’ owner, Eamonn McManus) and Rushy (Mike Rush, Saints’ CEO) has always been upfront and honest,” Wellens said.

“We are speaking about next year and recruitment and ways we can improve so those conversations are ongoing. I’ve got trust in Eamonn and Mike.

“I’m really enjoying the challenge of doing the job, I love this playing group and working with them and I firmly believe we can be successful in the future.”

Wellens insists that he can turn things around at the club.

“The job is very challenging anyway but especially when you are faced with what we are faced with in terms of adversity being down on numbers and not getting results.

“You have a choice about how you approach these situations, you can whinge and look for excuses or you can do what you’ve done all your life to get in this position by trusting the good people around you and trust that we will come out better for this experience.

“The team spirit has been pretty good, the energy has been good. I don’t want to see player sulking, it’s not what will help us win games.

“Everyone has a smile on their faces, there is a realisation of the situation we are in but I’ve asked the group to stick together.”
