THREE more former players will be inducted into Woolston’s hall of fame when Rovers hold their annual season-launch dinner next month.
The event will take place on Saturday, February 1 at the Warrington Masonic Hall from 7pm, when club legends Alan Johnson, Steve Martin and Ian Williams will be the centre of attention.
Johnson was a strong-running and hard-tackling secondrow in the 1960s and 1970s before helping the club tremendously off the field for many years following his retirement as a player.
Martin, a dynamic goal-kicker and excellent scrum-half or winger, was a key player during the 1990s and early 2000s when Woolston won three successive National Conference League titles and three Lancashire Cups.
He memorably scored Rovers’ try and goal in the 2001 Challenge Cup tie against Warrington Wolves.
Williams (affectionately known as ‘Wormy’) was a tough-as-teak forward who never took a backward step during the 1970s and 1980s and a member of the side who were among the inaugural ten teams to form the National League in 1985.
Also on the evening, National Conference League team coach Liam Lawton and Craig Woolvine, who is at the helm of the club’s North West Men’s League side, will outline their hopes and aspirations for the forthcoming season.
Woolston are targeting a successful year in Division One of the Conference, while the NWML team are hoping to move into Division Four following a successful season rebuilding in the Entry Division.
In addition, Rovers have relaunched an Under 18 side after a four-year hiatus.
Mark Brookhouse, meanwhile, will present heritage certificates to numerous players who have represented the Green and Golds with distinction over the years.
Guests will enjoy a hotpot dinner and tickets at £25 can be obtained by contacting Dave Whalley, either by phone or text, on 07809 647014 or by emailing him at whalley_dave@hotmail.com.
