WIGAN WARRIORS have added some international experience to their ranks with the signing of Papua New Guinea Orchids star Emily Veivers.
The Queenslander featured as the Orchids made the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, and now makes the move to Super League from the North Devils in Brisbane.
Whilst there she made eight appearances in the BMD Premiership alongside Warriors favourite Georgia Wilson, who returned to the club last year, after the Devils’ season had concluded.
Veivers is now hoping that her move to Super League can prove to an inspirational one for the next generation of players coming through in both Australia and Papua New Guinea.
“I’m really looking forward to playing in the Betfred Women’s Super League over here in England and joining Wigan,” she said.
“The club and environment here are amazing and I couldn’t be happier.
“It’s a massive opportunity for me as a player and a role model for the younger generation coming through in Papua New Guinea and Australia, just showing that there are a lot of opportunities out there in the world and, if you just stay determined, you can do anything.”
Veivers has been joined at Wigan by former York hooker or halfback Remi Wilton.
Signed initially as cover for the pregnant Sinead Peach, Wilton, who also has Australia A Rugby Union experience, made 10 appearance for the 2024 Super League Champions but was an unused substitute in the 18-8 Grand Final win over St Helens.
“I can’t wait to play in the Wigan colours,” said Wilton, who captained Canberra Raiders before they joined the NRLW and has also featured for Australian sides Central Queensland Capras and representative side Monaro Colts.
“After an exciting end to 2024 with York it’ll be great to build into the 2025 season with Wigan and hopefully have a similar outcome.
“The club as a whole has been really welcoming so it’s been a super easy transition – this feels like where I’m meant to be.”
Warriors head coach Denis Betts believes the double signing will not only aid his side in 2025, but also have a wider effect on the whole competition.
“It is great to welcome Remi and Emily to the Warriors, it shows the ambition of the club to pursue players of this standard,” added Betts.
“We look forward to seeing both girls thrive in a Betfred Women’s Super League, which is getting better each year.
“The need for the club to grow and the competition to get stronger is the thought process behind adding girls with this experience to a young and talented group. 2025 is looking like it’ll be an exciting year for Women’s Rugby League.”
