Hunslet coach determined to get the best out of Billy Jowitt

HUNSLET coach Dean Muir thinks he has a jewel in Billy Jowitt – and is backing the former Bradford back to make more of an impact in the second tier this season than last.

The versatile 23-year-old featured just once at league level and three times overall in 2024 for the Bulls, where he came through the development system to make his first-team debut in 2021.

While always highly-rated, Jowitt has suffered from a series of injuries, restricting him to 26 Bradford appearances in total.

He was released from the final year of his Bulls contract in November to make a fresh start as Hunslet upgraded their squad in the wake of promotion from League One.

“Billy has been bedevilled by a number of injures,” said Bradford coach Brian Noble at the time.

“He needs to be able to play first-team rugby and we couldn’t guarantee him that, but with games under his belt, I think he will become a super player.”

Muir agrees, explaining: “Billy is an exciting prospect with the potential to unlock defences. As well as being a real threat with the ball, he can also create opportunities for himself and others.

“He just needs an arm around the shoulder and a bit of love – and also a bit of luck when it comes to avoiding injury.”

While often a half with the Bulls, Jowitt played in the centres in the Challenge Cup third-round clash with Huddersfield.

“I was really pleased with him,” Muir added.

“His go-forward was great and his workrate outstanding.”

Hunslet memorably ousted Huddersfield from the Challenge Cup in 2003, but were unable to repeat the feat, going down 34-6 at the South Leeds Stadium.

Muir was nevertheless encouraged, and pointed out: “We performed well in parts and showed plenty of pride, passion and desire.

“That will stand us in good stead as we set about trying to make sure we stay  in the Championship.”
