‘The phoenix is rising’: Hunslet proud of making a profit

HUNSLET finance director Paul Owen says the club should be proud of staying in the black as well as winning promotion last season – and said: “The phoenix is rising.”

While Dean Muir’s men sealed a return to the Championship for the first time since 2015, off the pitch, a £2,000 profit was made for the financial year ending in November.

“That might not seem significant, but it reflects the board’s commitment to spending within our means and ensuring future sustainability for the club,” explained Owen.

“We went into the year budgeting for a loss of £60,000, never ideal, but we had built reserves over previous seasons to ensure we could cover it.

“To recover this situation and at the same time secure promotion is something everyone connected with the club can be proud of.

“Our success on the pitch came at a price in terms of additional winning pay, and we are grateful to Tony Levison and to Jason Peterkin and Andy Herrick, of our main sponsor 247 Blinds, for their financial backing which has been unwavering over the last five years.

“We were also boosted by additional revenue from our bars and matchday hospitality, which is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best in the game.

“The 1895 Cup home fixtures (against Featherstone and Batley) also provided a welcome boost to gate receipts.”
