CASTLEFORD TIGERS head coach Danny McGuire has revealed that a move for Chris Atkin has been in the pipeline “for a few weeks” following the playmaker’s move from Salford Red Devils.
Atkin has penned a deal with the West Yorkshire club for the remainder of 2025 and 2026 after uncertainty at Salford has seen them lose a number of high-profile stars.
The likes of Tim Lafai, Brad Singleton, Marc Sneyd and Deon Cross have all left the Red Devils and McGuire is over the moon to bring Atkin to The Jungle.
“It’s been an ongoing process for a few weeks. There was a lot going on at Salford and I think we made Salford and Chris aware that if anything could happen then we would do something,” McGuire said.
“It played out last week and he has been at the club this week. He is a great addition and a great lad. His big selling point is his ability to play in numerous positions.
“He just ticks a lot of boxes for us and we are trying to build a squad for competition.”
McGuire knows Atkin from their time together at Hull KR – and the Castleford boss has revealed that the 32-year-old could debut against Wakefield Trinity on Sunday.
“We played together, I was just finishing at Hull KR and it was Chris’ first year in Super League. We have had a good relationship since then.
“He will fit in really well, he is really professional. Some of the things we are trying to do in our environment, he will help with that.
“He will potentially feature on Sunday. We had 25 or 26 training out there today so there’s competition for places. We are in a decent spot.”
