Georgia Wilson confident it’s Wigan Warriors’ time to beat ‘bogey team’

GEORGIA WILSON knows Wigan Warriors face a massive challenge on Saturday if she is to make an appearance at Wembley.

Wigan face Leeds Rhinos in the Challenge Cup semi-finals for a third consecutive year, with the Yorkshire side victorious on each previous occasion.

But with the changes made to the squad by coach Denis Betts, Wilson is confident Wigan can pick up their first victory over Leeds since the 2018 Grand Final.

“I went down to Wembley last year with the Wigan men being there and I watched the women’s game,” she said ahead of the meeting at the LNER Community Stadium, York.

“It was gutting be be sat in the stands rather than to be out there playing.

“When I left to go to Australia, I’d said that the only club I’d come back to play for would be Wigan Warriors, so to be able to run out for the club I love is pretty special anyway, and it would be crazy to do that at Wembley.

“For some reason Leeds seem to be our bogey team and we have fallen short against them in the last couple of years.

“We’ve gone into the previous semi-finals and played really well for the first 60 minutes or so then fallen away a little. A lot of that comes down to experience and age.

“In past not many of our players have been involved in semi-finals and those bigger games so they have not known how to deal with the experience.

“But they’ve had a bit more of that sort of experience now and we have brought in some Aussie girls, have got Meg Williams in from Saints and Remi (Wilton) from York, so we do have more experience in the side now as well and hopefully that can help us through to the final.

“There is a really exciting vibe around the club and we do believe in ourselves, so I feel we have a really good shot at getting the win this time and making it to Wembley.

“But Leeds are still going to be tough regardless of how many players they have lost this year. They have a young squad, but they will still front up and put up a fight.”
