Paul Wood making most of Swinton Lions’ month-long wait for game

SWINTON LIONS coach Paul Wood has to wait for a month to see if his side can continue with the special formula they found in ending North Wales’ perfect start to the season.

Having bounced back from successive defeats to end Crusaders’ 100 percent record in League One, Swinton now have to wait until Sunday, June 1 for their next fixture, a trip to Midlands Hurricanes.

A bye week, followed by a cup week, and then the cancellation of the Cornwall game after that club’s demise means three blank weekends for the Lions at a time when they will have been buoyed by their latest victory.

Wood said: “It’s just the way the season pans out. Cornwall dropped out, which means there’s no game for us in the middle of this break, so we’ll give the lads a couple of days off and we’ve asked them to freshen up physically and mentally.

“We’ll come back in and turn the gas up a little bit in training which we need to because we’ve not got a game, so the lads need to be working hard.

“We found a formula (in the North Wales game) of how we play at our best. We showed it at the start of the season and went away from it. We showed it again and hopefully we can keep grabbing wins, which probably aren’t expected from this team.

“I know Swinton came down last season and sometimes you’re expected to go straight back up, but it’s a full rebuild and from where we were when we started in November, we should be proud and pleased with where we are now. We’ve got to keep building on that and keep getting better.”

With no game at the weekend, the players were out supporting Swinton Lionesses, who played Salford Red Devils in the Women’s Challenge Shield final at Featherstone on Sunday.
