Sam Burgess slams no penalty try call as Warrington Wolves fall to disappointing defeat

WARRINGTON WOLVES went down 20-14 to Castleford Tigers at The Jungle this afternoon.

The Wolves were poor throughout, trailing 12-10 at the break before being unable to mount a late comeback.

And head coach Sam Burgess was disappointed after the game: “Conditions were similar to last week but it was tough to watch. Parts were decent we conceded too many points.

“We’ve been working hard in that area but it’s just not transferring for us yet. We’ve got to stay on it.”

A moment of contention during the game, however, saw Alex Mellor sinbinned for a high tackle as Josh Thewlis went over the try-line.

Mellor held Thewlis up, but referee Jack Smith gave a penalty instead of a penalty try – and Burgess was unhappy.

“It’s becoming very common these poor decisions, I’m so confused.

“Last week, a try went up as no try against us with six minutes to go. It was clear and James Vella spent five minutes reviewing it and still overturned it.

“That put Catalans in front with three minutes to go and we somehow managed to win. Phil Bentham told me he got the call wrong.

“I’m really struggling to understand the no penalty try call. I’ll probably get an email from Phil Bentham saying ‘it should have been a penalty, sorry Sam’.

“It’s past that point of frustration. We are in round 19 in the league with five Challenge Cup games. There’s no opportunity for input.

“I don’t know if the game wants to get better. It’s just where it’s at.”

Warrington were also hit with two injuries.

“Jordy Crowther dislocated his elbow. It went back in quick enough but he did a test on it at half-time and it came straight back out.

“Elbow joints are complex, it depends what damage has been done.

“Marc Sneyd carried a niggle into the game. He laboured a bit in the last 30 minutes.”
