Willie Peters delighted with response as Hull KR close in on Shield

HULL KR boss Willie Peters urged his club to “not worry too much” about the Super League table as they moved closer to winning the League Leaders’ Shield with an impressively dogged win over St Helens.

First-placed Rovers host play-off chasing Hull FC next in a home derby on Sunday, September 7. If results go their way, it is feasible they could clinch the League Leaders’ Shield on that day.

The club had not lifted a major trophy for around 40 years until this season, but Peters is now on the brink of taking a second one in a matter of months, following on from the Challenge Cup final win in June.

Asked about whether the win over Saints was a big step towards the League Leaders’ Shield, Peters replied: “It certainly helps, of course. But we can’t worry too much. It’ll look after itself.

“We’ve had a certain style and approach to every game and we don’t want to go away from that.”

On the performance and bouncing back from losing at Leeds, the Hull KR boss said: “We showed a lot of character and that was the most pleasing part.

“We probably didn’t show that at Leeds the way we would have liked to. We were looking for a bit of a response.

“It was mainly around performance, intent and working hard for each other, and that’s what they did.

“That was a semi-final type game (against St Helens). Look at the Grand Final last year, one try in that game.

“A lot of people will go to attack first – but I look at that game and I look at the defence, and the ability to be able to strangle teams and build pressure through our defence.

“What I was most proud about was when we went down to 11 men (in the first half with a yellow and green card) and they just turned up for each other and worked hard.”
