Graham Steadman to remain coach as Newcastle Thunder make two key appointments

NEWCASTLE THUNDER have made two important off-field appointments and confirmed that former Great Britain international Graham Steadman will continue as coach.

The 63-year-old took over on an interim basis from Chris Thorman back in June and is looking forward to building on a partnership with York and Penrith Panthers.

He said: “I’m absolutely delighted, privileged and honoured to be given this opportunity. I’m really excited about the future of Thunder and what we can build based on the strong foundations laid by the young men of the club. Without them, we wouldn’t be in this position.

“We’re determined to make sure Thunder are visible and active in and around the city of Newcastle.”

Richie Metcalfe has been appointed as the club’s new chief executive and Steven Watkinson as general manager.

Metcalfe played for the Gateshead Thunder National League Two title-winning team of 2008 and his arrival prompts the start of a number of announcements about the club’s future.

He said: “I’m incredibly proud to be back where my journey started in Rugby League as a teenager.

“Our focus isn’t just on the scoreboard, it’s on the club as a collective entity. We have a clear vision for building the commercial engine of this club.

“We will be an indispensable partner to local enterprise, and as a Royal Navy veteran, I’m keen to lean on that network to forge lasting links with the Armed Forces community. We are here to compete and to grow, commercially and culturally.

“Finally, I must also extend my sincere gratitude to Keith Christie and Jordan Robinson. Without their tireless efforts in resurrecting this club in 2023, this opportunity simply wouldn’t exist.”

Watkinson arrives at the club after departing Keighley in August.
