Doncaster poach duo from troubled Featherstone Rovers

JAMES GLOVER says Doncaster were the only club he wanted to play for if he left Featherstone Rovers.

The experienced centre was contracted to Featherstone for the next two seasons, having only moved from Sheffield Eagles in May.

But Rovers’ ongoing financial issues have seen their top talent look elsewhere for deals.

Glover has signed with the Dons until the end of 2027, while prop Gadwin Springer has also made the switch to South Yorkshire.

“I always said that if I wasn’t going to stay at Featherstone, there was only one other club that I’d want to get involved with,” said 31-year-old Glover.

“People that I know here and that I’ve spoken to speak very highly of the club and say you get well looked after.

“That was one of the main reasons that I came here. There’s a bit of a personal connection too with my wife and all her family being from Doncaster.”

Glover has racked up more than 200 appearances over his time with Dewsbury Rams, Sheffield (over two spells), York Knights and, for a short time, Featherstone, scoring 92 tries.

Dons head coach Richard Horne said: “He’s a strike player. We were a bit short on edge players when we looked at the squad.

“When James became available, we wanted to have the conversation and it’s great to have him on board.”

French international Springer played 85 games over four years with Featherstone.

“I’m really happy to have everything sorted now,” he said after signing a one-year deal.

“It’s been a tough few weeks, not really knowing what is happening but we got this done quickly and I’m really pleased to be here.

“There’s a great vision for the club and the future looks really bright so I’m happy to be part of it.”

Doncaster have also agreed contract extensions with forwards Tyla Hepi (to 2027) and Sam Smeaton (2026).
