SHAUN WANE insists he should remain England coach for next year’s World Cup.
Australia completed an Ashes series whitewash with a 30-8 victory at AMT Headingley.
The RFL will now need to decide whether to stick with Wane, who took charge of the national team in 2020, oversaw their semi-final exit from a home World Cup in 2022 and is contracted until the end of next year, or make a change.
Asked if he believed he was the man to lead England down under following the defeat in Leeds, Wane said: “I don’t believe, I know I am.”
He added: “I’ll do a report on the series and sit down with people at the RFL – they don’t like us losing. We have to look better for the World Cup next year.”
Reflecting on the series as a whole, Wane said: “We’ve not played well enough for long enough periods against a very good team.
“This is a different challenge against a team who will ask you questions.
“It was a bit unknown for us. We hadn’t played them (in a series) in decades. To lose 3-0, I feel so gutted for the players.
“We’ll reflect hard on what we’ve done, how we played, the squad we picked, the style of play, how hard we trained.
“I was genuinely optimistic when I went into this series but it was a real test.”
England were again in the contest for long spells, with only four points separating them before Harry Grant scored a crucial 62nd-minute try.
“There were some good things,” said Wane.
“There was a period in the first half where we really put them under pressure for long periods, but you need to convert them and at crucial times we didn’t score when needed to.
“They’re too good a team and they burn you if you don’t.”
England scored only two tries across the whole series but Wane insisted: “We can easily fix the way we attack – that’s not a big worry for us.”
