Rugby league readers vote on when Championship season should start

RUGBY LEAGUE readers have been split over their opinion on when the Championship season should start.

In recent seasons, the second-tier campaign has begun in February, but that will all change for 2026 with the new season kicking off in just over a week’s time.

In the latest edition of League Express, readers were asked about their opinion about the new start for the campaign.

The poll asked: “The new Championship season will begin on Friday 16th January when Salford host Oldham. Is this the right time for competition to begin, or which of the following alternatives would you prefer?”

It’s fair to say that a February start date was the most popular amongst voters, with a March start line also being appreciated by a quarter of voters.

– The season should begin with local derbies on Boxing Day – 16.22%

– It should begin on New Year’s Day – 5.16%

– It should begin in January as it is scheduled to do – 15.20%

– It should begin no earlier than February – 29.53%

– It should begin in March – 25.82%

– It should begin with local derbies on Good Friday – 8.07%
