Swinton Lions aim to ‘awaken sleeping giant’ with stadium move

SWINTON LIONS coach Paul Wood is excited at the prospect of the club going on a similar journey to that he experienced as a player at Warrington.

The club, currently based at Sale, are set to present plans and proposals for a new stadium and a long-awaited return to Swinton after more than 30 years.

And Wood said: “I was at Warrington when they moved from Wilderspool to the Halliwell Jones Stadium, and I saw not only the transition in terms of facilities, but the transition where it attracts new players, brings new revenue, brings new people through the gates and exposes new people to Rugby League.

“So it’s everything that comes with it as well. It has this tidal-wave effect and hopefully that can happen at Swinton.

“Swinton is a rugby town. It’s a shame that they’ve not played in Swinton for many years, a number of decades, and so if we can take it back to Swinton, we can hopefully awaken a sleeping giant really and the club can be really competitive with the right infrastructure in place.”
