WIDNES VIKINGS have a willing worker in Matty Fleming, who says he doesn’t have a preference when it comes to what position he plays.
The 30-year-old has become part of the furniture at the club, and is closing in on 100 appearances for them since joining from Dewsbury in 2022.
Over the years, he has played fullback, winger and centre, from where he scored a try in Friday’s 18-12 victory at Oldham.
That followed a double for the former St Helens and London Broncos man in the 22-10 win at Workington.
Fleming says he will play anywhere coach Allan Coleman asks him to.
“You know me, I’ve played quite a few positions over the years of being here and Allan knows wherever he needs me to play, I will do it,” he explained.
“I don’t really have a preference over position, as long as I am on the pitch I don’t really mind.
“I will try and do whatever I can to help the team out so anywhere is good for me.”
Following the varied nature of the 2026 campaign with different competitions, Fleming is happy to get stuck into the Championship.
“To get a few games under the belt now after coming up against an amateur team (Thatto Heath in the Challenge Cup), a full-time team (Leeds), and having league games, the start of the season has been a bit all over the place,” he added.
“It will be good to get to gel as a team because we’ve got a few new players.
“It takes time to get those combinations going, but I’m hoping we will soon be firing on all cylinders.”
