HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS are heading to Dewsbury from next season to play at an upgraded FLAIR Stadium which they will redevelop into an 8,000-capacity facility.
As his club prepare to leave the 24,000-plus Accu Stadium, where they have been based since the venue now solely owned by Huddersfield Town Football Club opened in 1994, Giants owner Ken Davy remains committed to constructing a new ground of around 8,000 in the Huddersfield area.
It’s among a series of projects new executive chairman Ralph Rimmer is working on as he bids to revitalise a club currently bottom of Super League and playing before dwindling attendances.
But until a new home becomes a reality, the Giants will, subject to RFL approval, play alongside Championship side Dewsbury Rams at the FLAIR Stadium, ten miles from the Accu, taking control of an extensive site and as part of the £10million-plus upgrade, building a new stand at the currently unused end of a ground which was also opened in 1994 and currently holds around 5,000.
The Giants have played a match at the FLAIR Stadium when the Accu has been unavailable in both 2025 and this year, with a positive reaction each time.
While a “strong partnership” between the two clubs, both of whom fall within the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, is envisaged, the Rams will remain autonomous but become tenants on a long-term agreement rather than owners.
The Giants last year sold their 20 percent share in the Accu Stadium, which they consider too big for their needs, to the football club, who have begun their own redevelopment.
That sale will help fund the FLAIR Stadium upgrade, which also includes alterations to the pitch, improved floodlighting, refurbishment of the existing stands and new hospitality suites, dressing rooms and press facilities.
The Giants see the move as a route to long-term sustainability for both themselves and the Rams and also one which will enhance the matchday experience for supporters.
“It’s no secret that as a club, we have fought to find a home in Huddersfield,” said Davy.
“We had to move from Fartown (their original ground, in 1992), from Leeds Road (the former home of Huddersfield Town), and now from the Accu Stadium.
“But Huddersfield Giants will not retreat. We will not compromise or quietly shuffle into the shadows.
“While we remain Huddersfield Giants, I am proud to announce our stage for the 2027 season and beyond is Dewsbury.
“The FLAIR Stadium is the perfect location for us, it will have the right capacity and facilities for the Giants and our fans to thrive while we continue the search for our permanent home.
“Our one giant future starts now, and my overriding aim is to create a purpose-built stadium within Huddersfield for the Giants to call home. My commitment on that has not wavered. However that was not feasible for the 2027 season.”
Rimmer added: “The Giants’ future is bright, and we are excited to lead the club into this new era.
“For fans, the matchday experience will be our focus. A smaller, more intimate ground means the crowd is closer to the action, letting the atmosphere grow.
“The FLAIR Stadium offers everything supporters need from parking and accessibility to corporate hospitality and function rooms.”
