Wakefield Trinity handle ‘tension’ on first step to home play-off tie

IT’S advantage Wakefield Trinity in the battle for fourth position and a home play-off eliminator after their 28-12 victory at home to York Knights.

Wakefield opened up a two-point over Leigh Leopards, who they play in the final round of the regular season, after the visit of third-placed Warrington Wolves next Saturday.

Beating York ended a three-match losing run and made certain of their place in the play-offs, and coach Daryl Powell said: “It was a close game so I was relieved.

“I felt we dominated the game territorially and got York towards the back end, which I think most teams have.

“When you need to win it creates a bit of tension and I thought there was tension in the game and in the crowd.

“The boys were pretty relaxed in training yesterday and even today but it was a pretty awkward game in tough conditions.

“York were pretty competitive and durable and there we were areas where we’d like to be a bit better.

“We are fighting for a home (play-off) game – I know it’s in our hands.“

Halfback Mason Lino returned from injury off the bench, replacing Jake Trueman around the hour mark, as Jack Sinfield retained his place alongside.

Powell said: “I thought Jack’s kicking was phenomenal – he kicked off his left foot for a try and then kicked off his right, which is his dominant foot, and come up with a couple of assists.

“There is always a debate when you change halfback.

“Truey (Trueman) played really well and has been our premier halfback during this year but then Mason came on and freshened us up a little and he adds another string to our bow.”
