MAX JOWITT is looking forward to a “fresh start” after penning a two-year deal with York Knights.
The move sees the 29-year-old reunite with Mark Applegarth, who served as both head of youth and head coach during the pair’s time at Wakefield Trinity.
Jowitt brings to an end a twelve-year spell with Wakefield, for whom he made over 180 appearances, following in the footsteps of his father in playing for his boyhood club.
A goalkicking fullback, he holds the record for the most points scored in a single season with 500 – the 26 tries and 198 goals accumulated during Trinity’s treble-winning Championship campaign in 2024 – and is one of only three players to have amassed more than 1,000 points for the club.
This season, he has made 15 appearances for Wakefield, but has fallen out of favour, with new signing Roger Tuivasa-Sheck instead expected to start at fullback for the club next year.
As such, head coach Daryl Powell could not begrudge Jowitt the opportunity to play the minutes he deserves as the Knights’ number one next year.
“I’m buzzing for the opportunity to have a fresh start at a club like York, especially with the direction that the club is heading in,” enthused Jowitt, among the scorers in Wakefield’s win over the Knights last weekend.
Applegarth is delighted to be linking back up with the prolific back, whom he believes will help to take York to the next level.
“I’m really glad we’ve got Max joining us,” he explained.
“He’s a proven Super League player with nearly 200 games under his belt, and he’ll add a different dimension to us in attack.
“He’s one of the best passers of the ball in the league in that second phase of attack.
“He’s a lovely person as well, and I’m really looking forward to working with him again. He’s a player I know well, and I think he’ll help push us as a team onto that next level.”
