GARETH O’BRIEN has signed a new deal to continue with Leigh Leopards into a fifth season.
The 34-year-old was part of the Leopards’ historic 2023 Challenge Cup-winning squad after linking up with Leigh ahead of that season.
Since then, O’Brien has gone to play 97 times for the Leopards, scoring 13 tries, kicking 84 goals and five field-goals, including 20 appearances this season.
That’s despite the former Warrington Wolves, Salford Red Devils, Toronto Wolfpack and Castleford Tigers playmaker no longer being a first choice, instead playing back-up to the spine of David Armstrong, Adam Cook and Lachlan Lam.
But Leigh head coach Adrian Lam said: “I’m really happy to have extended Gaz’s stay at the Leopards.
“He’s one of the finest Rugby League brains I’ve worked with and has been vital during his time here.
“Obviously, he’s nearing the back end of his career now, so he knows his role will change slightly. But I told him that last year and, because of injuries this season, he’s made plenty of appearances.
“That just shows the importance of having a versatile player who can cover in the halves and at fullback.”
O’Brien said: “I wanted to stay. Whether that’s in a different sort of role again, or similar to this year, I’m happy with that.
“I’m very grateful to still be doing what I do at my age. I’ve just got to keep enjoying it while it lasts, and I’m already looking forward to next year.”
