Hunslet on the up, says departing prop Eddie Battye

HUNSLET can kick on in 2027, according to departing prop Eddie Battye.

The 35-year-old might be among a number of players leaving the south Leeds club, but it follows an enjoyable year after a move from Sheffield.

In the wake of a tough 2025 campaign in the old-style Championship following an against-the-odds rise from League One in 2024, Hunslet finished 13th in the merged second tier.

They gained eight wins from 24 matches, including a notable home triumph over Newcastle, playing a high-tempo reactive rather than process-driven style of rugby under innovative coach Kyle Trout.

Battye, who played for London Broncos and Wakefield in between two spells at Sheffield, believes there would have been more points had it not been for some early-season departures and a glut of injuries, which led to a number of loan signings.

“Hunslet was good,” he said.

“I enjoyed being part of the group and playing under Kyle, and the club has created a good culture.

“Some lads leaving and the injuries affected us because we had a fairly small squad to start with. While the loan players contributed, it always takes time to settle and get used to the systems.

“We all learned things along the way, and I’m sure Kyle will be an even better coach from the experience he has gained.”

Meanwhile Hunslet have announced a kit deal with Ravensport.

The Dewsbury firm will also provide training wear and merchandise, with director Brett Turner saying: “We’re really pleased to be working with Hunslet, a club with tremendous history, a strong identity and a passionate supporter base. Those qualities really appealed to us.

“We’re looking forward to working closely with the club to produce a range that respects that heritage while also bringing something fresh.”
