Whitehaven look to expand community foundation work

WHITEHAVEN want to expand the work of their community foundation and spread the Rugby League word in local schools.

They have already unveiled plans for a pathway system for players from under twelve to under 16 level, and want to have under 18s in the mix by 2028, so providing a stepping stone to open-age rugby.

The project has the support of Super League Wigan, and the plan is to work with neighbours Workington.

Whitehaven also want to go into primary schools to deliver ‘introduction to rugby’ sessions, explaining: “These will be focused on getting children excited about the sport.

“We will be giving out leaflets signposting kids to local community clubs to explore playing some more.

“Our community clubs have great youth set-ups and we as a club should be shouting about it.”

Whitehaven also aim to run six-week programmes in high schools, building rugby fundamentals.

They added: “We are hoping to deliver all this through grants and with the help of business partners, allowing us to develop Rugby League in the local area.

“We want to help tackle childhood obesity by creating better habits with nutrition and getting kids exercising more, as well as developing local talent.

“The under 15 and 16 kids will hopefully get the chance to play in some games against the development teams of Workington Town and Barrow Raiders.

“This is an exciting time for the county and for our club.”
