A MEETING called for the Super League clubs has failed to reach a final decision on whether to elevate London Broncos into the competition next season, League Express understands.
The Super League clubs, all of whom attended the online meeting on Friday apart from representatives from Hull KR, were asked to give their approval to London entering the competition.
However, when presented with the potential fixture list implications that would arise from having 15 clubs in Super League, it appears that some of them withdrew their support from London joining the competition in order to be given more information about the possible structure of the season next year.
There was therefore no decision made on whether to accept the offer tabled by the NRL that would see that organisation managing the competition from next season.
The RFL hasn’t yet commented on the outcome of the meeting but League Express understands that there are growing doubts about the likelihood of a final agreement being reached between the respective governing bodies.
That will have important implications for the broadcasting arrangements for next season, with the NRL deal favouring an agreement with streaming giant DAZN, while there is also an alternative bid on the table from Premier Sports, who will be broadcasting this year’s Rugby League World Cup, which kicks off next Thursday.
And League Express understands that some Super League clubs are still keen on investigating whether RL Commiercial’s in-house streaming operation, SuperLeague+, could play a role in streaming the four games that won’t be broadcast on Sky next season.
