THE DOLPHINS believe they have signed “one of the most accomplished halves in the game” after finally confirming the upcoming arrival of George Williams.
The Warrington Wolves and England captain has been known to be returning to the NRL since last year, having previously spent time in Australia with Canberra Raiders.
The 31-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Brisbane-based Dolphins, who are coached by Kristian Woolf and have fellow England stars Herbie Farnworth and Morgan Knowles in their team.
Williams will go up against Tonga coach Woolf, as well as likely new halfback partner Isaiya Katoa, on Saturday when England open their World Cup campaign in Perth.
“George is one of the most accomplished halves in the game and to have someone of his experience and leadership joining the Dolphins is a huge boost for our squad,” said the Dolphins’ chief executive, Terry Reader.
“He has performed at the highest level in both the NRL and Super League and has proven himself as a leader on the international stage with England.
“George brings a strong kicking game, competitiveness and a wealth of experience that will complement the players we already have within our spine.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to bring George to the Dolphins and to see what he can add alongside Isaiya, Brad (Schneider, the former Hull KR and Penrith Panthers half) and the rest of our squad from 2027.”
Williams played 32 times for Canberra between 2020 and 2021, cutting short his stay to return to England.
Having previously won two Super League titles and a World Club Challenge during his time with hometown club Wigan Warriors, Williams joined Warrington with hopes of adding to his trophy collection.
However Warrington failed to lift silverware in that time, losing three major finals in the last three years under coach Sam Burgess including the Grand Final earlier this month.
