Nathan Rushworth next to sign Keighley Cougars extension

KEIGHLEY COUGARS forward Nathan Rushworth has committed for 2027 as new boss Matt Bramald continues to put together a squad he believes can improve significantly on a 16th-placed finish.

The Cougars are seeking far more stability than they had this year, which started with Alan Kilshaw at the helm before his eve-of-season departure and the subsequent appointment of former Featherstone assistant coach Ian Hardman, who departed after the end of the season.

Former Hunslet team chief Bramald knows Keighley well, having both played for the club and held various roles on the coaching staff previously, and arrives after two seasons in charge of Dewsbury amateur team Shaw Cross Sharks.

Rushworth, 24, joined Keighley a year ago, having made an impression in a then-struggling Newcastle side, for whom he played 20 times over two years.

Originally from Huddersfield and an ex-Siddal junior who was at one time in the Giants development system, he also represented the renowned Northumbria University side and turned for England Students.

Rushworth has made 23 appearances, both in the front and back row, for Keighley, who said: “Nathan is an exciting young player who has shown his commitment, determination and enthusiasm in a Cougars shirt.

“His decision to remain here is another positive step as the club look to build a competitive and ambitious squad.

“Retaining players who understand the club, our supporters and what it means to represent Keighley is an important part of our plans.

“Nathan’s contract extension provides further continuity within the squad and reflects the club’s ambition to develop a strong group of players who are committed to moving the club forward.”

Also staying on board at Cougar Park are winger David Foggin-Johnston, halfback Matty Beharrell and pack pair Dan Parker and Jack Teanby.
