THE Scots have their strongest squad in a few years, but it’s still unlikely to get them out of the group stages, given the quality of France and Australia.
However, they will give it a good go, as their performances in this year’s Celtic Cup showed, where they were competitive against both Wales and Ireland.
The creation of Edinburgh Giants for Super League has been a masterstroke. They finished a creditable fifth in the competition this season, and this club provides seven of the Scotland squad.
James Simpson-Hill MBE, a World Cup winner with England, will line up for Scotland in this World Cup, after making his Bravehearts debut in the Celtic Cup. He’s now the head coach of Leeds Rhinos this year, so has only played three competitive matches in 2026, but what he’ll lack in recent game-time, he makes up for in experience and inspiration.
KEY PLAYERS
MAX OWEN was named as the Wheelchair Super League Young Player of the Year this season, after scoring 26 tries in 11 appearances for London Roosters, helping them to the semi-finals in both that competition and the Challenge Cup. His dad has played for both Wales and England in the past, but not at a World Cup, so this is a first for the Owen family.
With a remarkable individual record this season, Callum Davidson has never failed to score in a game for both Edinburgh Giants and Scotland in 2026. His 47 tries and 57 goals for his club certainly went a long way to helping them to fifth in Super League.
COACH
MARTYN GILL recently took the Wheelchair Super League Coach of the Year award following Edinburgh’s performances in 2026. Head coach of both club and country, he was appointed to that position in August 2024 after an overhaul when it was declared all the coaches must be based in Scotland.
