Tough day all round. That 20 minutes after half time when we just couldn’t get out of our half killed us…but full credit to the lads, who dragged themselves right back into the game until the interception try… They were a different team to those that we destroyed at their place, JK has really put his mark on their defence, and he’d have loved that scrap in the rain. A reality check and was always gonna be tough today, so no complaints. A defeat has been coming, and rather today than either of the next 2.

BATLEY V WHITEHAVEN - Sunday 3rd July 2022 - SCORE PREDICTIONS
LuckyDog replied to barfieldlad's topic in Batley Bulldogs
Never take anything for granted in this league. Did they not beat us last season at home, when we were held up over the line about half a dozen times? It was tight up there until the sending off. 34-24. -
Wow. What a performance. if Leaky had been playing we’d have won by 20

Exactly. Fantastic TEAM performance. Hooley Kaye Brown -
I think their slope is nearly as important as ours. Win the toss, play up hill first half, hot afternoon, defend like demons, Wardy & Tom running down the hill second half… 18- 25 Otherwise, they’re saying on Twitter that they have a score to settle And they’re running down that hill second half.. 18-43 I expect a drop goal from them, they won’t take any chances this time.. Not many great memories from going over there. The madness of Ainy, a hammering under a shell shocked John Kear, and to cap it off, I was in Benidorm when Flanagan won the play off

Superb first half. The coach must’ve been buzzing about that. We didn’t give them an inch, and they rarely got into our 20. Only one penalty given away, forcing goal line dropouts, fantastic line speed, varied last plays, threatening high kicks, 3 tries up hill too. Second half just relentless too. We look in good shape at the moment. That Workington team should’ve beat us up there, so full credit to the coach and players for stepping up today.

Deserved to win but maybe the score line flattered us. We were better side all game but the sending off definitely made a massive difference. Last 20 minutes we were running free and playing some great stuff. The fussy referee getting lots of grief from the locals, but a yellow card for a high tackle on Hooley instead of on report, in the first 20 and it’s maybe a different game.

Struggling with this, as it was a night to forget Manning Gledhill Buchanan -
Miles off tonight, we never gave ourselves a chance, how many errors in possession? But credit where’s it due, they were miles better than us. Outside backs must’ve been twice the size of ours, just too strong in all areas. They’ll take some stopping. I was gonna boycott the Bash as it’s only in Leeds, but that Fev v Leigh fixture on the same day as us might just be worth hanging around for….

You’ve got to give credit to Workington, got in our faces and rarely made any errors. They grew into the game and deserved that HT lead. Some of our decision making today was very poor, but we can’t always play with the fluency and strike of last week. We should’ve taken the one pointer about 10 minutes before we started trying, we were in front of the posts, and they weren’t expecting it.. Man of the match choice might be a struggle, but I think Leaky today lead from the front second half, he made the difference.

We’ve had some tough choices this season due to some fantastic team performances, and today is as difficult as they come….any of a dozen players could be named here… JC - Energy and end product. Gledhill - a handful up the middle all game. Buchanan - his best game for us.

You are bang on about the closeness of both games. In my earlier post, I said the difference on Sunday was (man of the match) Lilley. And I was thinking about the York game, didn’t Jamie Ellis kick a 40/20 down the slope and they scored a converted try from the resulting set? We lost by 6 points…. That bit of smartness wins you a game.

Frustrated. Lilley had far too much time to take that drop goal. It was like we never expected it….yet how many games has he won doing that? 12-12, half time hooter impending, we’re in their 20 and we never even thought about the drop goal and turned it over near the touchline… Battled hard as always but smart thinking the difference.
