Doncaster RLFC head coach Gary Thornton spoke to the official website after Sunday’s clash with Batley Bulldogs.

The Dons went down 34-6 at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium, leaving the clubs Championship status hanging by a thread.

Speaking about the match Thornton admitted it was another difficult defeat to take.

“It doesn’t get any easier that’s for sure, yet again we find ourselves 30 points down and chasing the game,” Thornton said.

“We can’t seem to get into a lead and defend it, we are always chasing the game and it is tough, it is the same story every and it is difficult to take at times.

“Batley won the toss and decided to play uphill, I said to them before the game lets try and get some points on the board and try and defend it if we can, but we weren’t able to do that unfortunately.

“We had a bit of a dig for 20-25 minutes in the second half, but it was too late by then, we were 30 points down.”

The Dons are now ten points adrift at the foot of the table and Thornton has challenged his squad to show him what they are capable of.

He said: “What we have to do now is look at what we have got and who we are going to keep in order to build a squad up for next year.

“That is up to the players to show what they have got and work hard for the rest of the season and we will build a side around those players.

“If they don’t want to do that then we will bring some new players in for next year.

“I’m really putting the responsibility on the players now to show what they can do.

“We have to keep going and try and finish the season off as brightly as we can and hopefully get a win.”
