  • The 22-year-old talks about beating their close rivals and the confidence it will give the squad.
  • Partington: “I never felt we were ever going to lose that game or that they would break us which is a good sign for when we go into the Play-Offs.”

Ollie Partington believes St Helens could not deal with Wigan as the Warriors beat their arch-rivals to move to the top of the Betfred Super League table on Friday night.

Adrian Lam’s side overcame Saints for the first time since 2018, as tries from Jake Bibby, Tommy Leuluai, Bevan French and Jackson Hastings sealed victory.

Partington believes it was strong performance across the field and the whole team playing their part that saw them win.

“I thought everyone played well, even the subs who came on lifted us, and we just kept getting better. They couldn’t handle us with our energy and how aggressive we were. I don’t think you can pick a Man of the Match, it was just a good team performance.

The 22-year-old says the focus was always on beating their rivals, and not on how it would affect the league table.

“We just wanted to beat Saints, there was no thought of finishing top or the points percentage, we didn’t even talk about that before the game. We just wanted to beat them and prove that we were the real deal who can go on to win this.”

Whilst the prop says it was a sweet feeling beating St Helens for the first time in two years, he wishes the Wigan fans were there to watch it.

“It’s been a while since we won against them. We were buzzing and kind of created our own atmosphere, but it would’ve been better with fans there. For me and a few others, we have been embarrassed by them in the last two years, which has been tough to take, so it’s good to get the win.”
