  • FT | Warrington Wolves 21–8 Wigan Warriors.

A Liam Marshall double was not enough to earn Wigan Warriors a win on the road as they were defeated by Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Wednesday night.

Despite looking the stronger of the two sides at the break, Adrian Lam’s men were unable to convert enough chances to overhaul the scores the Wire put on in the Betfred Super League Round 16 tie.

The Warriors will now turn their attention to Sunday’s home fixture with Leigh Centurions.

Report

After taking into possession a Tommy Leuluai kick well on the last, Ben Currie was rocked by the follow up tackle from the Warriors half then immediately knocked on in the 14th minute.

The resulting set lead to the opening try of the game a minute later through Liam Marshall. A left edge move found its way to the winger, who touched down in the corner with a trademark dive.

Warrington hit back just three minutes later through Blake Austin. The Wire half latched into a Daryl Clark offload at pace to score.

Wigan retook the lead in the 24th when Marshall scored his second of the game. A brilliant chip to the corner found the on-running winger who again dived over in the corner.

The Wire grabbed one back on the stroke of half time, when a Blake Austin’s kick on the last was tapped down deep in Wigan’s goal area by Josh Thewlis.

Steve Price’s men extended their lead a couple of minutes the other side of the break through a Stefan Ratchford penalty kick from 30 metres out.

Warrington also grabbed the next, when Jake Mamo scooped up a loose pass in the Wire 20 and ran the length to score.

An altercation in the 68th minute involving a number of players resulted in both Mamo and Wigan’s Oliver Partington being sent to the bin.

Three minutes from time Austin slotted a drop-goal for The Wire to extend their lead to 13.
