Leeds have to match Salford’s intensity, says McDermott

Brian McDermott has called on his side to match Salford’s intensity in Friday’s Qualifiers clash.

The Red Devils enter the contest in desperate need of a victory having already lost to Leigh and Hull KR in the Qualifiers.

A third successive defeat would make Salford’s quest for survival that much harder, with a place in the Million Pound Game almost becoming the best scenario for Ian Watson’s side.

As a result, McDermott is expecting a huge effort from Leeds’ opponents and has called on the Rhinos to be ready for a stern task.

“They’ll be good,” said McDermott.

“There’s a lot at stake for them, there’s a lot at stake for both clubs but because they’ve lost two games in the Middle 8s they’ll be hugely energetic for this one.

“It probably means they’ll be more focused than ever. The challenge for us is to be as focused and meet whatever they bring and then some.”

Having already won three games in the Qualifiers, Leeds are closing in on Super League safety. However, McDermott has talked up the importance of Leeds enjoying the final stages of the season, rather than just focusing on their Super League status.

“Because of what has gone on this year and the story surrounding us, we’d like to finish all four games off, nail all four and finish on a high. The pre-season and off-season is a hugely important period for us and it’s important that we go into that on a high.”
