New deals for Castleford pair

Castleford Tigers duo James Clare and Daniel Smith have both signed new deals with the club.

League Express can reveal the pair have put pen-to-paper on new contracts with the Tigers with Smith extending his stay by 12 months and Clare signing a two-year contract.

Winger Clare, 29, is in his second spell with the club, having returned to the Tigers in 2018, and he has played 91 times in total, scoring 53 tries.

A consistent performer, Clare has been a reliable figure under Daryl Powell and emerged as one of Super League’s best metre-makers, finishing 15th in the Super League charts for metres made last season.

Meanwhile, Smith joined the club last season and has been a regular in the side since his mid-season move from Huddersfield.

The 27-year-old was preparing to go on the open market last week, but a late change of heart saw him commit to a one-year extension.

Clare and Smith are expected to be joined at the club by Grant Millington next season, who is also set to be retained on a 12-month deal.

Castleford have several players off-contract this season, including Junior Moors, Matt Cook, Calum Turner and Jacques O’Neill and their future remains unclear, while Mike McMeeken is on his way to Catalans.

From a recruitment perspective, Niall Evalds has joined the club and could still arrive early if they are willing to pay a transfer fee, though no other signings are thought to have been finalised.
