New rugby league club formed – and they’re on the hunt for players

Teignbridge Trojans are currently on the lookout for players with the aim of entering a team in the South West League in 2017.

Set up last month by Barry Whittle and Joe Bramley, they have ambitions to become Devon’s next new active Rugby League club, as Whittle explains: “Me and Joe were very successful at our previous club, Devon sharks, becoming South West champions four times and reaching the semi-finals of the Harry Jepson Trophy.”

The pair stepped down at the end of last season to take a break after serving the club for ten years, but Whittle admits: “As soon as I left, I missed it.

“So I looked into an opportunity to get something going in Newton Abbot, just down the road from the Sharks.

“The ambition is to allow more and more people to have a chance to experience our great game.”

The Trojans, based on the south Devon coast, 12 miles north of Torquay, have big aims going forward and are hoping to have a first and second team set up within three years, as well as a women’s team and an under 16s outfit.

Whittle added: “We want to bring Rugby League to as many new people as possible.

“My message to anyone thinking about trying Rugby League is – come along and give it a go! I guarantee you’ll love it after you’ve given it a whirl.”

The 2017 South West Rugby League season is set to run between May and August next year. Email Barry Whittle on bjw1980@icloud.com for more information on how to get involved.
