Widnes considering move for Soward

Widnes are believed to have lined up Jamie Soward for the 2017 season, should Kevin Brown leave the Vikings in a shock move to St Helens.

Reports in League Express this week linked Widnes’ influential halfback with a shock move to Langtree Park in 2017, with Keiron Cunningham looking to reshuffle his pack after a frustrating 2016 season. With Luke Walsh out of contract at the end of the year, it is understood that St Helens are willing to do everything in their power to sign the former Wigan star.

Should that deal go ahead, it would leave Denis Betts with a huge void to fill for 2017, with Brown’s partnership with Joe Mellor being a real strength of the Vikings over the last 18 months.

And it is believed that their primary target is 31-year-old Soward, who is out of contract at the end of the year having recently signed for Championship side London for the remainder of the season.

Soward suddenly left NRL side Penrith last week, despite becoming a frequent starter for the club, and promptly joined his former club as they look to push for promotion. However, the move to London is thought to be a short-term switch, with Soward keen to play in either Super League or the NRL next year.

Should London get promoted, Soward might consider a stay at the Broncos, but Widnes are thought to be already lining up a move for the halfback on the basis that Brown does leave the club at the end of the season.
