Atkin looking to make the most of Whitehaven game

Swinton Lions star Chris Atkin believes tonight’s game with Whitehaven is the ideal opportunity to get their season up and running.

The Lions face Whitehaven tonight, with both sides still looking to register their first wins of the season after consecutive Championship defeats.

Both sides have shown improvement in recent games, and Atkin believes a victory would boost their season after a tough opening to the campaign.

“We’ve had some tough games to start the season and we knew we could go out and play with some freedom and not worry about the result,” he told TotalRL.

“This one is a big game and an opportunity to win the game.”

After promotion from League One last season, the Lions have been named as one of the favorites for relegation. However, they have impressed so far this season, narrowly losing to Dewsbury while also scoring plenty of points against Bradford and Sheffield.

“We’ve shown that we’re not going to be a team that is just here to be rolled over,” said Atkin.

“We’re going to be a tough side and teams are going to have to come and beat us to get the two points.

“It’s just about us putting points on the board now. It’s early doors, but for us if we can focus on putting in a good performance the result will take care of itself.

“It’s too early to say the result could decide anything and could determine who could go down because we’re only four games into the season. But we know we get our season up and running and this is an opportunity to do that.”
