Looks pretty good to me. Only real surprise in their for me is Sam Smeaton in the starting line-up, but as a young lad coming through the ranks, if he has been going well in pre-season, then that can only be a plus to me. Will be interesting to see who would drop out if we only had the usual 4 players on the bench. You can't beat a bit of genuine competition for places to keep everyone on their toes. biggrin.gif

Sam played in 15 out of 32 games for the first team last year.

I know. I would have expected that he would not be 1st choice centre this year however given some of our other signings, especially given many of his appearances last year came from the bench to the wing. I'm delighted to be proved wrong though, and hope he has a great season. biggrin.gif

Yes. He started 10 games on the wing, and 2 at centre.

We don't really know who the first choice centres (or wingers) will be yet, do we? Sam will be in the mix with about three or four others.

To be honest, I suspect there will be a few changes throughout the season in several positions, as form and performances dictate, as we appear to have greater strength in depth this season in my opinion. I was only quoting the "full strength" comment from the original article however, which would indicate for the time being at least, Sam is in pole position for one of the centre positions in the starting line up. Well done to him!

Well aye, it's his shirt on Sunday, so good luck to the bloke. Im guessing most fans think it'll be Saxton-Marabe-Nandye-Steel in the three quarters but Im sure Welham and Smeaton will have something to say about that.

Positionally, there's a lot up in the air, isn't there? What are the best positions for the Papuans? For JJ that may well be stand-off. Will we get the best from Tommy Saxton on the wing?

It'll be interesting to see how it pans out, but competition for places is always good, eh?

I know squad numbers don't mean a huge amount but interesting to see Smeaton with 3 and Welham with 4.

We've also got Coady to put in the mix as well, if we can get him off Leeds.

Yes, that is interesting.

DP had this to say on Coady...

QUOTE
Centre Mike Coady, who is dual registered with Featherstone and Leeds Rhinos, will be joining Rovers later.
Said Powell: "Mike Coady is playing for Leeds at the moment they have a couple of injuries in the outside backs.
"He will be training with us as we are going into the season and I'll make a decision on when I think he's ready to be given an opportunity."

Obviously he'll be trying to hold down a place in the leeds squad in which case we'll never see him. Otherwise, he'll be in the mix too
