Maybe they only counted the paying customers and ignored all the wigan free ticketeers. !!??

The John Street Stand has a capacity of just under 7000. It certainly looked more than half full to me so I guess you may be correct about not including Wigan's freeloaders.

They didn't look very tightly packed to me. There were big sections at either end completely empty.
What tends to happen is that people will leave a seat or two between their party and people they don't know. So you get a false impression of how many were there. If the stand holds 7000, probably take off 1000 at either end for the empty bits, 2950 won't be far out.

It's at least 1500 more than we would have got at don valley
